CABAL Estates North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2018 is a total smasher and a drinking-now expression of Pinot. Plonk is one of the first business to work directly with Cabal Estates and we couldn’t be more excited. First of all, let’s talk about New Zealand. Deep in the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand is famous for Sauv Blanc. However, flying a little under the radar in comparison is Pinot Noir. Planted in most of the regions in New Zealand, the diversity of styles is dramatic.
The CABAL story is this, Ed, the proprietor started this project 5 years ago, it’s been that long in the process. Very, very limited. A true small production example. Only 3275 bottles of 2017 and 540 bottles of 2018 were produced. So you got to get in fast and this is finite.
This CABAL Estates Pinot Noir comes from North Canterbury, located in the northeast area of the Southern Island. Theo Coles makes an expressive style that’s obviously Pinot and so easy to drink. What’s interesting is that it all comes from one clone type of Pinot Noir, 10/5.
The process here is 100% stainless steel ferment and then 100% old oak maturation. Wild yeasts for the ferment with some bottle ageing to promote palate development. Delicate, bright purple colour. Much lighter and fresher 2017 but not as complex. Typical of the vintage. Aromas of strawberry rose and fresh cherries. The palate is vibrant and softly textured. Very typical of 2018 and Theo’s new winemaking process. Kind of Burgundian in profile but totally smashable. Comparing the 2018 and 2017, the ’17 is really serious where the ’18 is in a perfect drinking window.
