Gaja Barbaresco 2015

Gaja Barbaresco 2015, Nebbiolo from one of the top producers in Italy. Yes, we know its pricey, but it’s special. 2015 as a vintage in Piedmont was an interesting one. A mild winter kicked things off followed by a wet spring. This provided a decent amount of water for the vines though. As May approached so the did varying temperatures which slowed down blossoming. Gaja has a great canopy management process which helped them navigate some of the heat through the summer so the ripening process was as slow and long as possible 2015 has been noted for the evenness of ripening within the bunches and also how compact they grapes were on those bunches.
Amazingly. 14 different vineyards in the Barbaresco area contribute to this wine with altitudes between 250m and 300m above sea level. The vineyard average age is prime and hovers at 40 years old. Each individual vineyard parcel is processed separately, this includes maturation. When all the parcels are fermented they are ages in oak for 12 months. Then finally blended together to give you this Barbaresco. This 100% Nebbiolo is one of Italy, if not the worlds finest expression.
In the winery, the hand-harvested fruit took on average 15 days to ferment all the while promoting a gentle tannin structure and well-integrated acidity and alcohol. The resulting aromatics are delicate and pristine. With lots of rose petal, violets, cherries, spice and tobacco. The palate is ripe and juicy but oh so complex and layered. It needs time to open up but when it does its unreal juice. Lots of black fruit clusters, berries and cherries with silky tannin.
